Assessment before treatment

Pigmentation Assessment in Ipswich

A consultation-led assessment of selected pigmentation concerns before any laser or treatment recommendation is made.

A changing, irregular, bleeding or otherwise concerning mark should not be treated as routine cosmetic pigmentation. It may require GP, dermatology or another appropriate medical pathway.

Not every mark should be lasered

Assessment comes before treatment

Laser treatment is intended for selected benign pigmentation concerns. If a mark is new, changing, irregular, sore, itchy, bleeding or crusting, contact your GP or an appropriate skin specialist for medical assessment rather than booking cosmetic laser treatment.

Dual wavelength

The SmartPICO platform combines 532 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths for pigment at different depths.

Consultation first

The mark, skin type, medical history and treatment goals are reviewed before treatment is recommended.

Patch test

A test area may be required so the skin response can be assessed before a full session.

Individual results

Response, number of sessions, recovery and risk of pigment change vary from person to person.

About SmartPICO

Not every pigmentation concern should be treated the same way

Pigmentation can have different causes and patterns. The clinician considers the appearance, history, skin profile and treatment goals before discussing whether SmartPICO or another pathway may be appropriate.

Assessment does not guarantee suitability for laser or a particular result.

What happens during assessment

The clinician reviews the concern, how long it has been present, whether it has changed, previous treatments, skin profile and relevant medical history.

Pigmentation concerns considered individually

Sun spots, freckles, lentigines, melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation can behave differently. Suitability, likely response and risk must be discussed for the specific concern.

When cosmetic treatment is not the right next step

An uncertain or suspicious lesion should be referred for appropriate medical assessment rather than treated cosmetically. Some pigmentation patterns may also respond unpredictably or need a different approach.

Your recommended next step

After assessment, the clinician may discuss SmartPICO, another treatment approach, monitoring or referral. Pricing and any patch-test requirement are confirmed before treatment is arranged.

Questions

Pigmentation assessment FAQs

Does an assessment mean I can have laser treatment?

No. The assessment determines whether laser appears appropriate and whether another medical or treatment pathway should be considered.

What pigmentation concerns can be discussed?

The service information covers selected sun spots, freckles, lentigines, melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, café-au-lait marks and uneven tone. Each concern is assessed individually.

Can melasma be treated?

Melasma can respond unpredictably and is assessed cautiously. The clinician will discuss whether SmartPICO or another approach is appropriate for your pattern and skin profile.

What if the mark looks suspicious?

It should not proceed as routine cosmetic treatment. The clinician may recommend GP, dermatology or another appropriate medical assessment.
