Palpable lumps and swellings

Body, Lumps & Bumps Ultrasound in Ipswich

A private ultrasound option for selected palpable superficial lumps, bumps and localised swellings.

Ultrasound cannot confirm that a lump is harmless or exclude cancer. Breast and testicular lumps require the appropriate dedicated clinical pathway.

Not sure which pathway is right?

Discuss the lump before booking

For £50, the clinical team can discuss what you have noticed, help determine whether a soft-tissue scan is suitable and explain if GP or specialist assessment should come first.

Characterises a finding

Ultrasound can measure a lump and show whether it appears fluid-filled, solid or mixed.

Selected superficial areas

Suitability depends on the body area, depth, symptoms and clinical history.

No ionising radiation

Diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves.

Clear next-step pathway

A report can support monitoring, GP review, further imaging or specialist referral.

About soft-tissue ultrasound

A closer look at a palpable finding

A lumps-and-bumps scan focuses on a specific area that can be felt beneath or close to the skin.

Ultrasound can measure the finding and describe its depth, internal appearance and relationship to nearby tissues, but further assessment may still be needed.

Lumps and bumps ultrasound assessment

The service may assess

  • A persistent superficial lump
  • A cyst-like swelling
  • A suspected lipoma
  • Selected superficial lymph nodes
  • A localised tender swelling
  • A finding that appears to be changing

When a lump needs medical assessment

Seek medical review for a lump that is growing, painful, red or hot, hard and fixed, persistent or returning. Breast and testicular lumps need a dedicated pathway.

What the scan can describe

The scan can record the finding's location, dimensions, depth and whether it appears fluid-filled, solid or mixed.

  • Size and shape
  • Depth beneath the skin
  • Relationship to nearby tissues
  • Selected Doppler blood-flow information

What happens during the scan

Gel is applied and a handheld transducer is moved over the area. The clinician may ask how long the finding has been present and whether it has changed.

Results and onward care

The report may recommend reassurance, monitoring, GP review, further imaging, biopsy or specialist assessment depending on the finding.

Questions

Lumps and bumps ultrasound FAQs

Do I need a GP referral?

You can contact the clinic directly, but suitability depends on the lump, its location and your symptoms. The clinic may recommend GP or specialist assessment before scanning.

Can ultrasound tell me whether a lump is cancer?

No. Ultrasound can characterise a lump and identify features that may need further review, but it cannot confirm or exclude cancer on its own.

Is this service suitable for a breast lump?

A breast lump should always be assessed through the appropriate GP or breast-clinic pathway. Do not rely on a general soft-tissue booking to replace that assessment.

Can any area of the body be scanned?

No. Ultrasound is most useful for selected accessible superficial tissues. The clinic must confirm that the area and clinical question are suitable.

What happens if the scan is inconclusive?

The report may recommend clinical review, monitoring, MRI, CT, biopsy or specialist referral depending on the finding and symptoms.
